Tom and Jerry Around the World
Happiness is... Peanuts: Team Snoopy
DVD Reviews by Jon Cooke
I have combined these two new DVD titles from Warner Home Video into one review simply because there isn't exactly much to say about them. They obviously aren't the bells-and-whistles collectible
box sets that the Golden Age Cartoons audience wishes we saw more of... but these discs do serve their intended purpose of budget-priced compilations aimed at the big box store customers just fine. Most of
my review of the Tom & Jerry in the Dog House
DVD from a few months back can also be applied Tom and Jerry Around the World. The disc gathers 22 "globetrotting"-themed cartoons onto one DVD. However, this time around most of the emphasis
is on cartoons from the recent Tom and Jerry Tales television series (only six of the twenty-two shorts on this collection are from the classic MGM years).
Here's a rundown of the 22 cartoons included (all material has been released on previous DVDs):
"Way-Off Broadway" from Tom & Jerry Tales episode 3
"Martian Mice" from Tom & Jerry Tales episode 9
"Medieval Menace" from Tom & Jerry Tales episode 7
"Abracadumb" from Tom & Jerry Tales episode 13
"The Million Dollar Cat" (1944)
"Din-o-Sores" from Tom & Jerry Tales episode 5
"Invasion of the Body Slammers" from Tom & Jerry Tales episode 18
"I Dream of Meanie" from Tom & Jerry Tales episode 15
"Neapolitan Mouse" (1954)
"Kitty Hawked" from Tom & Jerry Tales episode 22
"Flamenco Fiasco" from Tom & Jerry Tales episode 24
"You're Lion" from Tom & Jerry Tales episode 25
"Kangadoofus" from Tom & Jerry Tales episode 25
"Monkey Chow" from Tom & Jerry Tales episode
"Freaky Tiki" from Tom & Jerry Tales episode 5
"Monster Con" from Tom & Jerry Tales episode 18
"Royal Cat Nap" (1957)
"Spaced Out Cat" from Tom & Jerry Tales episode 9
"The Two Mouseketeers" (1952)
"Tom and Jerry in the Hollywood Bowl" (1950)
"Johann Mouse" (1953)
"Treasure Map Scrap" from Tom & Jerry Tales episode 10
Much like Tom & Jerry, DVDs of the Peanuts cartoons continue to be released. I honestly lost track of them after the series of chronological
collections ended. The current Happiness Is... Peanuts DVD series pairs one of the prime-time TV specials with an episode of the short-lived Saturday Morning series, The Charlie Brown and
Snoopy Show which ran on CBS from 1983 to 1985. Happiness Is... Peanuts: Team Snoopy includes "Lucy Must Be Traded, Charlie Brown" (a post-Schulz TV special from 2003) and Episode 15 of The Charlie Brown and
Snoopy Show (which consists of three short stories based on the comic strips). I must say I was surprised by the excellent picture quality throughout this disc.
It's nice to see that new-to-DVD content is being trickled out, though, I wish they'd pick up the the chronological collections
again or, perhaps, a set gathering the 18 episodes of the TV series.
